...so about my first day at NME
NME is in the Bluefin Building in Southwark, London. This building is HUGE. There's a hell of a lot of glass...this scares me.
Sorting the post out was the first job of the day...I cannot believe the amount of CDs they receive in one day's worth of post - it's literally hundreds. There's no way they all get reviewed, which is a shame as there are at least 30 freelance reviewers who could do the job. I feel quite sorry for the bands that spend so much time writing to NME and sending CDs that may not even get played (I will check this out tomorrow...) but I guess they wont' get anywhere if they don't try.
The office full of trendy thirty-somethings is not what I expected at all. They're all very laidback - busy yet approachable. There's not one suit in sight. Being a work experience student really does put you in your place though.
Music is played non-stop - today included Future Of The Left's new album, which I highly recommend for those partial to a bit of old-school punk-cum-indie-dance. Crystal Stilts' album was also on the stereo....let's not go there.
So I was given the task to basically to find out the line-ups for about 30 festivals this year and make an extensive list....and extensive it is.
The festival that took up most of my time today is SXSW Festival (South By Southwest), held on 18th - 22nd March 2009 in Texas, USA. It's not only a music festival, there's an interactive and film week too....but I can't even bear to look that up to tell you more. I have spent about 4 hours on that website and STILL haven't finished the list.
Did I mention there's over 1,800 acts playing?
This ridiculously huge number includes the following bands:
Ida Maria
Primal Scream
Calvin Harris
Peter, Bjorn and John
Echo & The Bunnymen
Chairlift
Ladyhawke
Attack! Attack!
The Von Bondies
Glasvegas
Pete & The Pirates
...the list does go on...at length!
I'm tempted though.
Ohhhh and gossip of the day (I'm not sure if i'm allowed to say this....) but Caleb Followill (Kings Of Leon for those who don't love him like I do) confirmed in a telephone interview that they will be headlining Reading and Leeds Festival this year....I'm there.
Check back tomorrow for the next installment!
